Sample requirements

In general, all kinds of solid samples can be analysed and displayed morphological in a high spatial resolution. However, specimens must be vacuum-stable and remain unchanged during electron bombardment. To obtain high quality chemical analyses, special sample preparation is needed: The planar surface area must be polished and the exact geometrical orientation of the sample must be guaranteed. Most geological samples are non-conductors of electricity and require a conductive coating using either carbon or metal coating. To conclude, the EMPA is a universal analysing technique that can be applied to inorganic as well as suitable organic matter.
